ENCICLOPEDIA is a "100% screen-printed, 100% hand-bound, 96 pages,26 authors,7 colors,4 hands, 2 operators,1brain and a half" awesome illustration magazine made by Stranedizioni from Barcelona.

Nini Sum from IdleBeats happily accepted the invitation of contributing one of her illustrations to the book. After a year she received this publication with the limited number '211' of 500. It's kinda touching while holding this purely hand-made art book which has traveled all away from Spain to China.

We ve recently discovered these posters in streets around Shanghai, the neighbors said that several aliens pasted them on one night while people and dogs are all sleeping! The aliens moved fast and refused to chat with the folks, very strange!

Intro:
In this high-tech, digital age, we could all use a low-tech, analog way to express our creativity. Come to Neocha's studio on March 13 to learn the basics of screen printing from Nini Sum, founder of IDLE BEATS, a screen printing studio that creates original, handmade prints & t-shirts in limited editions. In this free, introductory workshop, you will learn about the history of screen printing, the process from start to finish as well as how to produce your own designs for print or T-shirts.

Check out the posters(originally designed by Zeke Clough) we printed recently for Shackleton's gig at The Shelter (Shanghai) this Saturday, we are so exicited to work with Sub-Culture creating such well-designed and high quality posters, hand-pulled gig poster art finally arrives in Shanghai!

"Aces of bass, Sub-Culture have a big show on their hands this Saturday when they welcome in Skull Disco co-founder, and one of dubstep's most original voices, Shackleton in to Shanghai for his first show ever at The Shelter. It's going to be a huge deal, and they're doing it right, bringing in extra speakers and sub-woofers for this thing. It's the biggest one they've done so far -- it's excessive. I think they're just trying to show that they haven’t gone soft.

Every month, the Sub-Culture crew is inviting locally-based and international artists and graphic designers to design their event posters, and in collaboration with Nini Sum and IdleBeats, they're silk screening them up and making them available for purchase on the night. It's a really great idea -- hand-done, silk-screened images by unique graphic designers that you can buy for cheap, go get framed, and use to spruce up your living room. We've got some pictures of Idle Beats silk screening these Shackelton posters. Scroll all the way down for those.

For their first go with the concept, they've got artwork from Zeke Clough, a UK-based artist who designed all the sleeves for all the Skull Disco releases. His own distinctive style has been incorporated as "the look" of Skull Disco these past few years, but he's also done stuff for Mordant Music and Warp Records. Last but not least, his art work has also been featured in Wire, which we all know, is the Greatest Music Magazine in the World.

Speaking as someone with absolutely no real background in illustration (I checked out of comics sometime during the Bronze Age), I would describe Clough's style as The Misfits reading Zap Comics whilst high on hot knives. Possibly also listening to Cannibal Corpse. Maybe a documentary on Norwegian Black Metal is on in the background. “This Friday, we’re bringing together a group of our favorite Chinese creatives and teaming up Qrazy to raise money for Western China. At the event, called “Spongies,” creative works will be auctioned off from local fashion designers, photographers, illustrators, product designers and other leading-edge Chinese creatives, including Kim Kiroic, Nini Sum, Xixi, Yan Wei, Liu Yiqing, Tang Ting, Tyakasha, Sop2099. All proceeds from the auctioned works will be donated to the One Foundation to provide disaster relief for Western China, an area severely affected by water shortage and most recently, the Yushu earthquake.

The fund-raising party is taking place April 23 at 10:pm at the DDM warehouse (750 West Huaihai Lu, Shanghai).

This summer American clothing brand Volcom will be supporting a two month screen printing project in Shanghai and Beijing, titled Volcom x Young Emerging Chinese Artists Screen Printing Workshop. The event, presented by NeochaEDGE, IdleBeats and SOURCE, will bring together some of the best young Chinese and Western creatives in China to give workshops on screen printing methods, as well to launch the first Volcom t-shirt collaboration project in China. The workshops will take place at the source Shanghai store on July 17th and the source Beijing store on August 7th, 2010.

NeochaEDGE teamed up with screen printing studio IdleBeats to identify and work with a range of China's best young artists for the Volcom Screen Printing Workshop. IdleBeats founder Nini Sum quotes "It's a great pleasure to work with Volcom on the first live screen printing tour event in China. It has allowed IdleBeats to branch out and work with a group of talented and creative people from around the country. I appreciate the opportunity and look forward to getting my hands dirty at the events."

Below are the selected artists who represent various backgrounds and approaches to art and design:

Each artist has created a library of Volcom inspired imagery to be used as screen prints during the workshop. Also, the Volcom Art Department in Costa Mesa, California will be reviewing these designs and choosing one from each artist to be printed on limited edition t-shirts.

NeochaEDGE co-founder Sean Leow explains “among a youth generation that is increasingly connected by digital means, screen printing is a cool, low-tech way for kids to meet up, roll up their sleeves, get inspired and interact with artists to create a unique piece of artwork.” The Volcom Screen Printing Workshop will be open to the public, where guests can talk with the five attending artists, learn the basics of screen printing, and choose a Volcom design to screen print themselves.

The vibe of the Volcom Screen Printing Workshop will be "backyard barbeque." For those missing that backyard feeling and for those who like the smell of a traditional bbq, this will be THE summer event. Source will be bringing the backyard indoors, with live acoustic music, bbq area, beers on tap and grass under foot. In the midst of an urban backyard environment, screen printers will be set up in the middle getting messy. To all guests, be prepared for some painting fun!

Volcom x Emerging Chinese Artists screen printing workshop was a great event we did jointly with NeochaEDGE and SOURCE, this Beijing + Shanghai two-city workshop was the first live screen-printing event in China, we were more than happy and honored to bring the hand-print fun to creative crowds from both north and south sides of the country. The trip itself was quite like a band tour -although I've never toured with a band.. anyway, it was fun!

Good news! We have recently moved our studio into a chill old house on one of the most fun streets in Shanghai - Changle rd. Now we are going to start regular private workshops / tutorials, don't hesitate to book one here or at workshop@idlebeats.com if you are interested in getting your own artwork screen printed or learning basic screen exposure and printing technique!

Dark(screen exposure) room. The bright thing is our new custom-made stainless sink for washing screens, magical exposure machine is on the other side -it's too big to get through the dark room's door so we had to saw it into half then re-install it in the room.. huh!

Individualized screen printing workshops with one on one attention, bilingual tutorial and assistance from professional screen printers/artists. Participants can bring their own material such as T-shirts, art paper, greeting cards and print their own artworks/designs.

1-2 screens can be single color artworks x 2 pieces or 2-color artwork x 1 piece, concerning the time that screen preparation takes the digital artworks should arrive at least 5 days before workshop day. Format requirement: Vector(AI. EPS.) or High resolution(200+dpi) PSD with separated layers.
If you sign up for multipleclasses you can also learn about other aspects of the screen printing process, for example, screen exposure, design preparation, and printing on multiple different sorts of media. Special request will be taken on a case by case basis.

Being through a process of discussion, screen exposing, hand-printing and watercolor drawing, the prints start to become vital and spread out a warm feeling which feels so different from the normal plastic-ish wedding photos.

Their wedding in Dong'an at the central province of Henan(LiuJian's hometown) is pretty interesting too, it's a really typical traditional Chinese one like a grand festival! Below are some photos from China Daily, click here to read more.

"Rebecca Kanthor moved from New York State to China eight years ago, where she met Liu Jian, a young musician from the central Chinese province of Henan. After several years together they decided to get married in a traditional rural wedding. In the ceremony, the groom arrives on a horse while his bride is carried around the town by four men, announcing the marriage. Liu is the first person from Dong'an to marry a foreigner."

We recently designed and hand-printed this gig poster for Maybe Mars' Shanghai showcase at 'JUE' music + art festival, a concert of two awesome Chinese bands - AV OKUBO and SNAPLINE.

These two bands are both great but with different music styles, so Nini hand-drew a Fire Dragon to stand for the spirit of Av Okubo and a Sea Monster as the Snapline part, maybe you can feel the hot and coldness while listening to them.

"JUE | Music + Art is an independent urban arts and music festival in both Shanghai and Beijing. Now in its third year, JUE is a collection of alternative, creative and progressive arts and music events over a three-week period every March, presented by Split Works."

IdleBeats recently designed gig posters for two concerts of American band Crystal Stilts' European tour, Gregor from IdleBeats has also invited many poster designers around world to create artworks for other stops of the band's whole tour.

Here comes Mr.Gregor Koerting's masterpiece for Manchester first:

The artwork is inspired by the music as well as the album name.
“A forgotten corner in a museum, an unknown space or people's heart.” - as the artist explains.

It's a 2-color print on 250gsm matte argental art paper, first layer with smooth gradient effect all printed by hand. Silver paper reflects delicate color variations under different lights and environment, this poster is def a piece that worthy collecting and enjoying for a long time.

This one called"She Follows Me Into The Forest" is created by Nini Sum for the band's London concert. Both the visual and name inspiration come from the first song 'Sycamore Tree' of the band's latest album.

It's also the first time that we tried to use water-based luminous(glow-in-dark) paint -on the eyes and pyramid part. It spreads out a quiet and beautiful glow in darkness after absorbing enough light.

We are quite happy with the quality of the prints as well as the glow-in-dark effect. The paper is also a collector choice - thick double-side pearl silver card that generates delicate color reflections when you look at it from different angles.

New art print was born! 'Eyes Wide Open' is created by Nini for OSPOP's charity event "Proudly Made In China" at SOURCE Shanghai - sales of all the prints are being donated to Compassion for Migrant Children – a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting education for the children of China’s hardest workers.

It's a 4-color print on 300g high-quality black card paper, in limited edition of 100. Signed by the artist and stamped by IdleBeats.

IdleBeats has just come out with two new Japanese inspired posters for the CAMERA JAPAN Festival in Holland this fall. The festival is an annual event that celebrates Japanese culture, art, music but especially film.

IdleBeats' own Gregor Koerting was asked to design two great posters for the festival this year. The two unique posters each display a different character from Japanese culture: the geisha, and the tengu. The geisha, more well-known outside Japan than the tengu, is a refined artesian of Japanese culture who is skilled in the art of dance, music, tea ceremony, and conversation. Geisha still exist today in Japan. The tengu, less graceful than the geisha, is a demon known to protect Japan’s mountains and forests. Tengu are still worshiped as Shinto gods in shrines all over Japan.

The theme of this year’s CAMERA JAPAN Festival is “Made in Japan?” which is exactly what the characters on the left hand side of each poster mean. Any western elements you might notice in the poster pertain to this 'made in Japan(or not?)' theme, such as the windmill in the geisha’s hair which is definitely a Dutch element as well as the bucket of popcorn in tengu's hand.

Two posters are both with 4 layers, hand-printed by the artist Gregor Koerting himself. Geisha has an edition of 109 and Tengu only 95. Both prints are on high quality art paper and printed with water-based silk screeen paint. Also every order of a pair comes with a bonus gift!
